Less than 10 percent of opponent’s support from District 7
WINTER PARK, Fla. — After spending more than $2 million on negative television ads and undisclosed sums on smear mailers, Stephanie Murphy shows limited local support. Her report disclosed today has less than 10 percent of her contributions come from Florida District 7.
Only 37 itemized individuals of Murphy’s live in or near District 7. Instead, 91 percent of her money comes from outside the district, most of it from outside Florida.
With a stark contrast, more than 76 percent of Congressman Mica’s individual contributors live in or near District 7. Over the course of the campaign, Mica has more than 2,000 contributors from this area.
“Stephanie Murphy is being rejected by those people who she wants to represent as local contributors support Congressman Mica,” says Mica Campaign Spokesman Alan Byrd. “Congressman Mica has worked tirelessly helping the people of Central Florida, and it shows.”
Congressman Mica also has nearly 10 times more cash on hand, reporting $1.1 million at the end of September. The Murphy campaign has just $166,000.
Nearly half of Murphy’s total contributions were from committees, with only one based in Florida. Democrat members of Congress contributed $17,000, including $2,000 from Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. More than $50,000 was contributed from the national headquarters of unions.
The quarterly report does not include third-party spending, such as the negative and distorted television purchases from the DCCC and House Majority PAC.
It also does not include the money being funneled through the Florida Democratic Party, which has been the source of funding for the nasty mailers being sent to voters. The Florida Democratic Party does not have to disclose who is paying for the mailers until four days before the election.
“It’s quite ironic that End Citizens United gave Stephanie Murphy $10,000 this quarter, when her campaign is based on millions of dollars of outside money trying to buy an election,” Byrd said. “She talks about how Washington D.C. is broken, but she is the perfect example of why.”
