The Orlando Sentinel Declares
"MICA A LEADER"
Our position: The Winter Park congressman has been a strong representative for the region.

In his seven terms in Congress, Republican John Mica of Winter Park has emerged as a leader on transportation issues for his district, the region and the nation. He has earned another term.

Mr. Mica represents the 7th District, which runs from Winter Park to the edge of Jacksonville, but has dedicated himself to improving transportation throughout Central Florida. A senior member of the House Transportation Committee, he has secured millions in federal dollars for airport, road and rail improvements in the region. Thanks to his dogged efforts, commuter-rail service is scheduled to begin in Central Florida by 2009.

Mr. Mica could wind up chairing the committee if Republicans keep control of the House. In that position, he could do even more good for his district and the region.

Mr. Mica also has served as chairman of the House Aviation Subcommittee. He has spearheaded congressional efforts to improve aviation security.

Mr. Mica's Democratic challenger, Jack Chagnon of St. Augustine, is a political novice. A veteran and former social studies teacher, he advocates a deadline for a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq and universal-health coverage. He is sincere, but no match for Mr. Mica in his command of issues or potential to represent the district effectively.

Mr. Mica is a staunch conservative. We oppose his hard-line positions for offshore drilling and against immigration reform. But his leadership on transportation spans partisan boundaries.

The Sentinel heartily endorses John Mica in the 7th Congressional District.
